Blue Shield of California

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our team quickly launched a collaborative program with local women artists for the innovative health plan. Franceska Gámez (Sacramento), Larissa Marantz (Orange), Sarah Nobles and Kei Deragon (Kern), Harumo Sato (Santa Clara), Hanna Gundrum (San Diego), Belén Ledezma (San Bernardino, Riverside), and Sally Deng (Los Angeles, Ventura) showed the importance of nutrition and connection for staying healthy during this challenging time with a public health campaign that included posters mailed directly to 200,000 high-risk members in their communities. Creative directed by Christina Vanvuren, Claudia Gutierrez-Smith, and Emily Peters, with production design by Joanne Lam.

Civitas Networks for Health

Capturing the reach of health information networks and regional health improvement organizations who are members of this national nonprofit network was no easy task. Artist Una Di Gallo developed a modular illustration depicting America’s diverse architectural landscape - barns, monuments, skyscrapers, homes, public structures - where every element is interconnected by data points and infographic-inspired lines. Designed and creative directed by Joanne Lam. Winner of the 2022 Medigy HITMC Award for Website of the Year.

Creative director and design lead, Joanne Lam, and senior communications manager, Kaitlin Rebella, collaborated with the DexCare team through a brand revitalization built from a thoughtful research process that centered on a theme of “finding time” for enterprise healthcare organizations. These organizations often struggle with scaling while also facing complex patient access issues and clinician burnout.

Taking inspiration from the concept of “form follows function” as well as the elements of the company’s own health system software dashboard, every detail was considered. The interaction between colors and layered shapes/lines embodies the collaborative, joyful, and humanist nature of the brand while conveying the intricacies of "intelligent orchestration” in an abstract manner.

Artwork by Karolina Ficek and social media animations by Sarah Stern are oriented toward this “finding a way” message, including nods to the Swiss railway clock, exam room signaling flags, and subway maps. Reflecting DexCare’s core value of accessibility, we chose the open source font Readex Pro - originally developed to help improve reading fluency among low-proficiency readers and people with dyslexia.

This technology leader is focused on elevating the work of independent primary care practices and supporting the physician-patient relationship. Through our brand strategy partnership, we’ve delivered for Elation Health an extensive library of editorial-style photography from the front lines inside their customers’ clinics both before and during COVID. Photographer Kathleen Sheffer led many of the West Coast shoots for the project, which has already featured 17 primary care practices. Photographers Rachel Konsella (Washington) and Danny Bostwick (North Carolina) are also among the many talented photographers working on the project. Creative directed by Christina Vanvuren and Claudia Gutierrez-Smith

Art heals. For the 2021 HLTH conference, we commissioned teens from Boston’s Artists for Humanity to create three unique paintings inspired by perspectives of local healthcare leaders. The art installation displayed at the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program offices celebrates positive outcomes from this terrible health crisis. Artists: Darwin Jimenez “Together We Are,” inspired by Dr. Ami Bhatt and Dr. Jennifer Joe of MedTech Insights; Madeline Murphy “A Helping Hand,” inspired by Buoy Health; and Phoebe Warner “To The Streets,” inspired by Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. Creative directed by Claudia Gutierrez-Smith, Emily Peters, and Katherine McGraw of AMP COMMS. Social media directed by Andrea Anguiano.

Illustrator and motion designer Christy Lundy brought to life the Center for Nursing Excellence and Advancement project with a series of custom artworks depicting home health nurses at work. With a creative brief that included unusually complex color and responsive design requirements, Christy helped showcase diverse nurse figures in authentic “trunk technique” and “windshield time” settings as part of this program to celebrate the skills and heart of the profession. Designed and creative directed by Joanne Lam.

How do you picture the future of mental health? As part of our extensive brand update work with Osmind, Uncommon Bold helped to quickly coordinate a photoshoot with a local interventional psychiatrist practice to show life-saving ketamine therapy in action. Photographer Kathleen Sheffer joined us on location in Oakland along with the clinicians and a group of models standing in for patients, including our intern Andrea Anguiano. Creative directed by Claudia Gutierrez-Smith, these photos and a second daylong shoot at the Osmind headquarters became the foundation of their new website and marketing materials.

Racism Is a Public Health Crisis

In response to the murder of George Floyd and the civil rights movement during the pandemic, Uncommon Bold teamed with artist Kellie Menendez to commission a paint-at-home protest poster. Healthcare leaders and families across the U.S. printed the design, used the time painting it to talk about why we work for health justice, and displayed the final art in their community. The illustration features hummingbirds as symbols of brave and courageous fighters. Designed by Joanne Lam.
